“A Revolutionary Wave: Dutch and American Patriots in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World”
Matthijs’ dissertation examines the transatlantic connections between the American and Dutch Patriot Revolutions in the mid to late eighteenth century. Using previously undiscovered sources from American and European archives, such as espionage documents, printed materials, and records from revolutionary groups, his project argues that the Dutch and American revolutions of the eighteenth century were deeply entangled moments in history, sharing interconnected events and ideologies. Matthijs’ research illuminates how these entanglements shaped the revolutions in the Netherlands and America in the eighteenth century, inspired new revolutionary movements in the following decades, and proved foundational to the modern Dutch and American nation-states.
