Undergraduate Institutions
- PennKeys: All member institutions receive 10 PennKeys, which provide solely online access to the University of Pennsylvania’s digital library resources, including subscription databases and tens of thousands of ebooks. PennKeys may be requested for faculty, students, or staff.
- Undergraduate Research Workshop: Undergraduate students are eligible to apply to participate in the annual Undergraduate Research Workshop. This workshop, in which undergraduate students are paired with McNeil Center Fellows as mentors for their high-level research projects like a senior thesis or capstone project, meets in February and April. Travel and accommodation are funded up to a specified limit, should the home institution be unable to fund it.

Benjamin Franklin Distinguished Lectures: Undergraduate students are eligible to apply for travel awards to attend the Benjamin Franklin Distinguished Lectures at the Center’s facility in Philadelphia.
- Summer Internship Program: Undergraduate students are eligible to apply for the McNeil Center’s C. Dallett Hemphill summer internship program. These are paid internships that focus on public history and take place at archives and museums. In some cases, remote participation may be possible.
- Paid Summer Faculty Fellowship: Faculty are eligible to apply for a paid summer research fellowship at the McNeil Center. At least one fellowship is offered each summer, awarded on a competitive basis, with a stipend that will be paid either for in-person or remote use of McNeil Center and other Philadelphia-area resources (or a mixture thereof).
- Fellow Talks. Member institutions can coordinate with MCEAS and our current cohort of fellows to invite a fellow to provide a talk at their institution.
- Penn Libraries In-Person Access. All members of the public are welcome to visit Penn’s Libraries during weekday visiting hours. A photo ID is required for entrance. Local consortium institutions are eligible for up to 5 PennCards which allow individuals to check books out of the libraries and to use the libraries on the weekends. “Local” is defined as being located within approximately one hour of Penn’s campus.
- Public History Collaborations: Faculty and students are invited to participate in exclusive opportunities organized with public institution consortium members, e.g. site visits, tours, special events, and educational and exhibit collaborations.
- Virtual Benefits: While most of our Consortium members are located in the mid-Atlantic region, the number of members outside our geographic region is growing. We invite institutions from across the U.S. and abroad to consider joining. Nearly all of our consortium benefits can be enjoyed through hybrid/virtual participation.
- Representation at the McNeil Center: Each consortium member appoints a liaison, who is then invited to participate in the McNeil Center Advisory Board, giving your institution a voice in the direction our consortium takes in the years to come.

These are nine-month paid fellowships at the McNeil Center which include office space and access to all of Penn’s resources, and are exclusive to PhD candidates enrolled at member institutions.

- Summer Intern: Members have the opportunity to host interns as part of the C. Dallett Hemphill summer internship program. Past interns in this program (paid a $3,000 stipend from the McNeil Center) have helped institutions to gather research to support new exhibits, develop digital content, write blog posts, collect data, digitize documents, transcribe original manuscripts, and more.
- Networking Events: Members have the opportunity to participate in networking events facilitated and hosted by the McNeil Center and designed to bring institutions together virtually and in person to discuss issues of concern to the community.
